Small Group Profile: The Voorberg Small Group

Small groups at Willow Creek Church consist of 3 main pillars...

1. Each small group meets regularly, with individuals intetionally gathering together either in the church or in group members homes.

2. Each small group shares the goal of growing in discipleship and Christian edification. This is done primarily through Prayer, Bible study, personal discussion, confession of sin, and singing songs of praise.

3. Each small group serves its community. This is done through participation in service projects, seeking to "reach out" to neighbors, participating in community events, and more.

We are so blessed at Willow Creek Church to have 19 active small groups. That means, over 220 people are actively participating in a small group within our church family. Here is a description from one of our precious small groups, led by Richard & Esther Voorberg.

We meet on Sunday evenings from 5-7 pm. In the past we have met at our home but this past year we tried out meeting at the church. We typically meet three out of four Sundays a month.

Our children meet in a seperate classroom directly across the hall from where we are meeting.

We begin our meetings with a time of fellowship and eating. Everyone brings their own beverage and a appetizer/snack to share. We spend time studying for about an hour and then spend half an hour sharing prayer requests and praises.

Our studies typically center around a book that we read together or a video series that we watch together. We do not always have “homework” but when we do cover a specific book we often have to read ahead of the meeting to make sure we are literally on the same page.

As our group leader is often traveling, the teaching falls to the other male members of the group. This works well and there is never a shortage of willing and qualified teachers.

We meet at someone’s house several times a year for social events, including a party to kick off the year, a Christmas party, a Super Bowl party and an end of the year party.

We have been meeting since January 2011 when the group was led by Todd Way and Richard Voorberg. While many members have stayed the same there has been some moving on as well as new additions.
